About Hell's Corners: Canto III

Pop Quiz: what unfinished, unpublished full-page comic in some way or another accounts for 47.52% of all squidbunnies/hellscorners search strings?

You got it: Psychonauts: For Art's Sake.

In the spring of 2005 Nich and I were so Psychonauts-obsessed we got a little screwy and thought we could do a comic based on the intellectual property and actually, successfully pitch it to Tim Shafer and Double Fine. It didn't fly, but I've beaten that Purple Skeletal Warhorse elsewhere; point is, while hurriedly designing new characters for this thing and corrupting Scott Campbell's original designs I had to try to quick strike up a balance between the look of the game and my own art style, and while the result was rushed I kind of liked the look of it. So when our delusion was inevitably shot down I brought it to HC: Canto III.

I overhauled the way I drew everyone, most noticeably Jeff, who starts to look like a less gothy Johnny C. in this book, which I think must've caused me to mentally jump the mental rails to the adjacent Invader Zim track; the second he gets in Nightwillow's house the colors explode into saturated Rikki Simons pinks and reds. Except, you know, not as coordinated or attractive.

As an aside, I really preferred the way Cantos I and II looked on paper to the way they looked on a monitor, but Canto III is really made for print. The physical book is so nice I almost don't hate ComiXpress.
