For some reason, this makes me feel like crying.

GODDAMMIT

I am getting into my time machine and going back to 2002 and shaking Uematsu by the shoulders and slapping him until he snaps out of it and the Black Mages are never formed. Then I pull a lever and a curtain opens to reveal a harpsichord, a trumpet, and a classical guitar and I stand there tapping my toe, switching my gaze impatiently between Nobuo and the instruments.

You didn't know about the world merges? It made total sense; alleviating the creepy abandonment of some zones while shelling out to maintain fewer servers.

Oh, man. If you didn't know that.... did you know XI's level cap is now 90 and they let the behemoths loose in Sarutabaruta...?

Okay, I made the latter one up, but yeah.

I did know about world merges, however, you'll see the Fairy/Sylph one was pretty recent. I don't even know why I care, other than "original home" seeing as My Characters Are On Titan. I tend to stop caring about FFXI news for long stretches at a time and then get all caught up probably 2-3 times a year. Letting go altogether = nearly impossible.

Speaking of MCaoT, I'm going to be giving FFXI a last hurrah soon, since I have remembered my PoL ID and my password. Starting August 1st, so that they (hopefully) won't bill me a bazillion dollars for July. If you need me, I'll be on... Titan, I guess. When I'm not busy flirting with this chick who is totally into me but lives in Canada in WoW, anyway.

The only good things I can see are that a) I never needed to name change when I went to Titan (seriously, though, Kahel? Who wants that POS name?), b) Titan itself was excluded from the whole "realm merging" stuff and c) BetaFriend 3.0 STILL plays on Titan.

hey so uh

I decided to reinstall FFXI to tool around a bit till March, and it looks like I can't log in to PlayOnline. I know my member name and ID are correct, but it keeps refusing my password. I've tried every password I've ever used for anything. Pretty sure I was hacked.

Whatever the cause, the only way to fix this (according to Internet) is to actually CALL Square-Enix? Like, on the TELEPHONE? Really?

I never bothered with all the password token/soft keyboard/encrypted USB drive/magical incantation bullshit that SE has been pushing, but if all of that is necessary just to keep dudes away from my shit, I might as well just say "buh" and roll over and go back to sleep.

Oh man, sorry that happened to you, Alex. Hacking, and hackers, suck.

XI : After getting my baby Dancer to 15, I regret that I was not able to log in during the moon phase to get a Rogetsurin because I was asleep. Looks like the next one is going to be tomorrow when I'm awake though.

Man, are the zones EVER deserted. The only place I see people playing are grouped around/going to a Maw. Then again, I don't play in anyone's definition of prime time, as I'm only on in the mornings while the kid is in school.

Normally I wouldn't log in just to say "grats" on getting a job to 15, but I will in this case because DNC becomes DNC at 15. Behold, you are an unstoppable (if inefficient) killing machine.

Needs to go. Needs to go NOW.

BetaFriend wrote:
This was introduced into the beta for this past testing phase. I neglected to post anything about it in the thread because of two reasons.

1 ) I didn't encounter it
2 ) It was rumored to be something in the beta only

With this post, number two is shot completely out of the water and I can actually say something about it without regret. (I was afraid saying something about it, and having it turn out to be false would be misleading on my part)

This is something that beta testers for the majority of phase 3 have been complaining about. On top of the STILL terrible controls. On top of the STILL sluggish and fucked up UI system. There's a 250+ page thread for feedback on the UI & Basic Controls. This is where not only people are talking about UI & Controls, but about this 'Surplus'.

It started showing up and people had NO IDEA what it was, what it was for, why it was there. You GAIN SURPLUS LEVELS for fucks sake. I'm not even kidding on this.

Right now, as it stands, it's two hours of playtime with a two day cooldown.

Quote:
Fatigue, its boons and downfalls

Fatigue is not inherently a terrible system, but the way you are implementing it makes it a terrible system. You have to do major changes or literally nobody is going to play your game, not even casuals. Consider the casual player who only gets to play one day a week but plays for 12 hours. Suddenly he is punished for playing less than someone playing 2 hours a day every day, which comes out to 14 hours for the week. (According to your interview stating 2 hours = fatigue then 2 days to work it off).

Now I see the upside to fatigue, which is that bots will have a near-impossible time leveling and gil farming. That's great! However, there comes with that so many downfalls that the system absolutely must be changed.

The problems:

-Favoring punishment over reward. You aren't rewarding casual players, you are punishing hardcore players. There's a difference. Rewarding casual players is giving bonuses to them for not playing, not allowing them to play the game normally while everyone else suffers.

-Again, even casual players could suffer in the instance that they only get to play a day or two a week (likely the weekend) and try to get 12 or so hours of gaming in, just to be hit with surplus forcing them to quit.

-People are PAYING YOU to play this game. People are NOT paying you to NOT play this game. If someone wants to play a lot they should NOT be punished. If they are punished, they will QUIT. Since your game doesn't even cater to casual players in the first place, you will then find that you will have NO casual subscriptions and NO hardcore subscriptions. Square Enix, you are well known for catering to hardcore gamers and FF14 is no exception, casuals will not be able to pick up this game and enjoy it in its current state, you are blind to think otherwise, so with the majority of your playerbase being more hardcore you NEED to cater to them. You don't need to reward us, but you CANNOT punish us.

Please open your eyes Square. Surplus is fine in moderation, like perhaps 12 hours in a row with a 1 day cooldown. But 2 hours / 2 day cooldown is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard of. If you want any subscriptions whatsoever you will change this, and fast.

With that, I'm sliding back under my rock. :3

Wow. Just wow.

I'm glad I'm waiting for the PS3 version. I can only hope a lot of this bullshit gets ironed out by then. I have to imagine this fatigue system will be gone well before that, because as it stands, it's true, nobody would put up with that. Didn't Blizzard propose something like this for WoW, before it was released?
